Project «Environment Security: Strengthening Coordination of Project Formulation and Mobilization of Resources for Sustainable Radioactive Waste Management in Central Asia»
Project story
Project «Strengthening Coordination of Project Formulation and Mobilization of Resources for Sustainable Radioactive Waste Management in Central Asia» was created based on the results of the High-Level Forum «Uranium Tailings in Central Asia: local problems, regional consequences, global solutions» (Geneva, 29 June 2009). The project is implemented in Central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Joint declaration and priority actions defined by the countries at the High Level Forum served as a background for project creation; it appeals to the following:
1. Institutional strengthening of potential and regulatory forms for CA Governments possibilities improvement in sustainable radioactive tailings management.
2. Concrete initiatives for uranium tailings reclamation and territories remediation;
3. Development of local communities, including awareness rising as well as social, ecological and economic investment;
4. Potential public – private partnership for tailings recycling.
This project is funded by ENVSEC with support by the Government of Finland
Project activity
The project is aimed to support formulation of agreed projects portfolio aimed at mitigation of different aspects of radioactive tailings, development of other countries contacts with Governments of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as well as support of their responses and mobilization and coordination of donor aid. Project proposals will be developed in accordance with the requirements of donors and countries, where the activities will be conducted. It is expected that our proposals will be developed and tracked further prior to funds receipt and project implementation commencement.
